2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals - Day 4 Report, Full Results and Photos

Ramsden and Cossette Claim Junior RR Titles
by Scott Kelly

July 8, 2007 (Saint-Georges de Beauce, QC) – Day four of this year’s 2007 Tim Hortons Road National Championships brought with it both beautiful blue skies and the strong cross winds that the Beauce region of Quebec is known for.

At the the paracycling events in the morning Quebec continued its domination with Mark Beggs (QC) Equipe du Quebec winning the 40km Handcycling RR in 1:36:24. In the men's CP 3-4 event race it was Jean Quevillon (QC) Equipe du Quebec winning over Sebastien Bouchard (QC) Equipe du Quebec.

Mark Breton (QC) Equipe du Quebec took the win in the men’s amputee competition in the LC 1-4 category over Eric Bourgault (QC) Equipe du Quebec as Lisa Stowe (LC 1-4 women), Jeff Dickson (ON) Independant (LC 3-4 Men) and Stéphane Chaput (CP 1-2 men) were the only entrants in their respective categories.

In the tandem races, Daniel Chalifour/Alexandre Cloutier (pilot) Équipe du Québec won the men’s 40km road race in 2:04:49 over Stéphane Côté and Pierre-Olivier Boily (pilot) Équipe du Québec at 1:49. B.C.'s Carly Grigg/Barbara Bialokoz (pilot) Blind Sports CB were the only entry in the women’s tandem race.

Junior Men and Women's Road Race

The junior men took to the 20km course at just after 1pm on Sunday for six laps and the women rolled out five minutes later for four laps. The course featured the same long grinding hill that figured so prominently in the time trial course. This was followed by a few kilometers of rolling hills and then a long sustained downhill run to the finish.

The women took very little time to get down to racing when on the first hill a rider from Equipe de Quebec went on an attack that was marked by pre-race favorites Danielle Kenny (Team Alberta) and Denise Ramsden (Team Ontario). Five riders went on to distance themselves from the field. However this number was reduced further when Kenny attacked again and only Ramsden was able to follow.

After that race Ramsden commented, “Kenny was doing a lot of work early on to distance herself from the field and that might have cost her later on in the race.” Ramsden pulled for the final two laps of the race and Kenny did not contest the sprint as the winner rolled across the line victorious with a time of 2.28.48. Kenny took second, while Raphelle Chretien (Equipe de Quebec) won the field sprint to round out the podium in third.

The men’s race got off with a bang of misfortune due to a crash the first time up the climb. Things settled down quickly and the first half of the race was fairly quiet, with the exception of an audacious solo move by Devon Novakowski (Team Ontario). Displaying his attacking style that has made him a threat at many Ontario races this season Novakowski and Hugo Houle (Team Quebec) quickly put 30 seconds into the field. Houle had second thoughts and rejoined the main group while Novakowski went off on his own with his lead extended to a maximum of two minutes before a joint effort by members of the B.C. and Quebec squads on the fifth lap managed to reel him in.

A short break by a group of three including Simon Lambert-Lemay (Equipe du Quebec), recently crowned 2007 TT champ Matt Potma (Cycling BC) and Owen Harrison (Team BC) failed to get away. But on the final lap Guillaume Boivin (Equipe de Quebec) made a move that was quickly countered by Stephane Cossette (QC, EVA-Devinci) and Evan Flater (BC, Aviawest-Rocky Mountain Bikes) as the three rolled off the front for the break that would stick.

Working together, they grew their gap to over a minute as Cossette was able to outsprint Boivin for the win. Flater came in seconds later to claim third.

The time trials get underway on Monday starting with the Elite Women rolling out at 9am followed by the U23 Men at 10am and Elite Men getting under way at 1.30. Stay tuned for more coverage at pedalmag.com
