Tour de Delta 2007 – Stage 3 RR Report, Full Results, Omnium and Photos

Guloien and Pinfold Win RR - Guloien and Bell Win Overall
release by Tour de Delta

July 22, 2007 (Delta, BC) - A water logged weekend in the Tour de Delta ended with a rare and brief guest appearance by the Sun but the brightest yellow sight all weekend was still the Symmetrics jerseys which climbed to the top of the podium for the 3rd straight race.

Andrew Pinfold led the men in yellow in the first rain free race of the weekend, winning the White Spot Road Race to complete the Symmetrics sweep of all the men’s events. Zach Bell, the Brenco Hill Climb and Lehigh Cement Criterium champion, finished 4th to take the Omnium title as the overall winner of the 7th annual Tour de Delta.

The 140 kilometer men’s course begins in North Delta but it’s always won or lost in the closing 10 laps of the 8 kilometer course in Tsawwassen. The decisive winning move occurred on the first lap into the Tsawwassen loop. Symmetrics was a couple of stars short, losing Svein Tuft and Cam Evans, victims of the rainfall that plagued BC Superweek. They both suffered minor injuries in crashes on the slippery streets, Tuft in Gastown and Evans in Ladner.

Symmetrics still had a super sprinter left in Andrew Pinfold of Victoria, a 2 time winner of the Tour de White Rock road race. He took off in a 3 man breakaway with Jittery Joes Matt Shriver of Durango, Colorado and Health Net’s Doug Ollerenshaw of Portland, Oregon. They opened a 3 minute lead on the peleton but with a lap to go the pack had cut the margin down to one slim minute. The pack laid down the hammer and tried to hunt down the 3 rabbits. They hit 55 kilometers an hour down the backstretch trying to stay out front and wear each other out for the final sprint.

“I wasn’t worried about anyone catching us from behind,” said Ollerenshaw who tried to break away on his own but quickly got reeled back in by Pinfold and Shriver.”I was just going as hard as I could hoping that I wouldn’t get dropped because those guys are better sprinters.”

All 3 were elbow to elbow, wheel to wheel at the head of the final 400 meter stretch but with a hundred meters to go it was Pinfold turning on the after burners and blasting away by himself. He coasted across the finish line arms raised in a V for victory and pointing at the S on his chest. It stands for Symmetrics. Or is it Superman or Super-team?

“It is not one guy it is the entire team,” explained Pinfold. “I just wonder when it’s going to stop. We just keep winning races and it’s a different guy every time. I’m just nervous about next year. What are we going to do to top this? We always want to do well for our sponsors but I don’t think we had to prove anything this year. We did that last year. This year we just wanted to keep on winning. It was nice to see and hear the crowd reaction all week. They’re hollering for us all around the track. Some of them even know my name. Others are just responding to the jersey. It’s all just icing on the cake.”

Ollerenshaw held on to take second place, one second slower than Pinfold’s winning time of 3 hours, 30 minutes and 19 seconds. Shriver took 3rd.

The women’s 85 kilometer, 11 lap race turned into a rerun of the Tour de White Rock road race. Symmetrics veteran Leah Goldstein broke away early and turned it into a one woman time trial, wearing out the younger riders who tried to stay with her. Her tactics produced her first ever win in White Rock and almost succeeded again a week later in Delta. When she powered it into overdrive and left the peleton behind, 2 riders went with her, Rushlee Buchanan, who won the Lehigh Cement criterium on Saturday night and Leah Guloien. Buchanan was the first to fade when the 2 Leahs used their superior climbing skills to crack Buchanan and leave her behind with 3 laps to go.
But Goldstein couldn’t shake Guloien who had fresher legs and when they were still tied at the head of the long home stretch, Goldstein knew she was doomed.

“I said Oh God, she’s going to blow me away any minute now, and she did!,” said Goldstein. “She’s a good climber, a strong rider. I think she’s going to be the next superstar in Canadian riding and a future Olympian.”

The 25 year old Guloien, a mountain biker in only her 3 year of road racing, stepped on the accelerator and raced away with the biggest victory of her career, winning the White Spot Road Race in 2 hours, 21 minues and 34 seconds. Goldstein was a second slower and Buchanan held on for 3rd a minute 10 seconds behind the winner.

Guloien got to celebrate her 26th birthday a day early. “I’ll be 26 tomorrow, (July 23). This is the best present I’ve ever had,” she joked. “Really this whole week has been great for myself and my team. I quit my job this year to concentrate on racing for the first time. So far it’s worked out. I want to race NRC with a pro team in the US next year and hopefully it’ll be with Team Giant. This is our first year with a big team. Superweek was important to get attention and sponsors. We proved we can make it work so let’s hope we get a chance next year.”
