UCI MTB World Cup Schladming 4X#8 Final Report, Full Results, Overall, Photos - Graves and Beerten Win

by Fraser Britton

September 19, 2009 (Schladming, Austria) – Jared Graves (Aus) Yeti once again went gate to gate for another 4X world cup victory. With the title already in the bag, Saturday's event was a victory lap for the overall World Cup 4X winner. For the ladies, it was Dutch rider Anneke Beerten (Ned) Suspension Center taking home the victory after arch rival Jill Kintner went down early in the heats and was knocked out of competition. With the win, Beerten also secured the World Cup overall win.

Graves was joined in the finals by Romain Saladini (Fra) SUNN in second, Johannes Fishbach (Ger) Ghost in third and Joost Whichmann (Ned) RSP in 4th. "It's the best feeling. It's what I hoped for all season. I really feel like I can go even better next year. I didn't look at it as a victory lap. There was good racing tonight, that first corner was really sketchy. It was hard to keep it up with three guys breathing down your neck. It was just a perfect way to end a good season."

Graves discussed his run while being herded to the podium. "I know I can work on things in the off season and come back stronger next season. I've always struggled with peaking at the right time. This time I've had a week at home riding moto and xc for fun with the rest of the Yeti team, and I felt even stronger tonight. I'll learn from that and peak for Worlds next year. It's time for a bit of a bender for awhile I think, all right!"

Beerten took it easy in almost every heat, not wanting to take any risks after a string of bad luck lately, including being DSQ'd at Worlds for unintentionally cutting a gate. "I had a lot of anger in me from Worlds. but I tried to stay focused on this race. Doubling it up today was unexpected this morning, but i was feeling so good. I managed to stay focused even when Jill went down. I'm speechless. Stoked. Happy! I watched every single gate, I was even watching the girl in front of me to make sure she went around it!"

Beerten beat out Anita Molcik (Aut) Yeti, Katy Kurd (Gbr) and Mio Suemesa (Jap) Intense in the finals from start to finish, staying ahead of the carnage that plagued most of the women's heats all night. There we no Canadians competing in the event.
