October 29, 2009 - We caught up with top Canadian pro, Michael Barry, following the news that he had joined the new pro squad out of Britain, Team Sky. Barry has ridden for numerous top level teams and the Toronto native talks about this exciting career shift to a brand new team, other projects in his life and more...
Exciting news about Team Sky - tell us about the team and how you became involved. Michael Barry: Early in the season the Sky management contacted me, I spoke with them, met with them and then made the decision. They were extremely respectful and were clear about what their goals were - two elements which are critical to me when deciding on a working environment. The team philosophy is one that I was immediately attracted to.
The management's goal is to create an environment which is nurturing and also gives the riders everything they need to progress and achieve their maximum potential. The team isn't a hierarchy, or dictatorship (as is common in cycling) as much as it is a democracy where opinions are respected and each individual has a voice. Their resources - coaching, technical and physiological - are unlike any other in the sport and I am confident that within the next year the team will be one of the top players in the world. Sky is committed to not only professional cycling but also at the community level where they promote cycling and healthy living - I found this attractive as well.
Some of the members are old team mates - have you met everyone? MB: Yes several are Columbia teammates and good friends. I have raced with most of the other guys and we chat in the peloton. They have selected a solid group of riders who will continue to improve and will perform.
Getting an invite to the Tour de France is one of the team's goals - what else is on the agenda and what are your goals for 2010? MB: The team will compete at all of the big races. In November, I will meet with the directors to discuss the program and come up with some clear goals. The ProTour races in Canada and the Tour de France are at the top of my wish list.
Are you happy with your 2009 season and what are your plans during the off season? MB: Yes, I was happy with the season although I wished I was given the chance to race more during the second half of the year. My form was good throughout the year and we won some fantastic races. I will stay in Girona through the off season with my family. The weather is good here and it's my home.
Tell us more about your new book and other projects on the go. MB: I am working on a book with a good friend, Camille Mcmillan, who is a photographer. Using photos and words, we will tell the story of a professional cyclist - the book will be published in the spring. I am also working on a few other stories for different media which will come out in the next few months. Otherwise, I am trying to spend as much time as possible with Dede and our boys.
All the best we look forward to catching up with you in your new kit. MB: Thanks
