January 2, 2007 - The largest contingent of Canadians in recent memory are set to race at the upcoming LA Track World Cup, January 19-21.
The CCA will field an Olympic sprint team consisting of Commonwealth Games medalist Travis Smith, along with Cam MacKinnon and Yannick Morin. In addition Gina Grain will ride the points race, and possibly the scratch race depending on scheduling.
Ryan Mackenzie and Martin Gilbert will ride the Madison together and the pair should get some practice for this technical event all next week at the Giant Bicycles 6 Days of Burnaby. The two riders have some experience together having competed in this event at last year’s Pan Am Championships.
For the first time Canadians will race at a World Cup under trade team names. Symmetrics will have a strong presence, fielding both Svein Tuft and Zach Bell in the individual pursuit, and probably a team pursuit squad including Cam Evans and Christian Meier.
Team R.A.C.E is also set to send former Canadian National points race champion and pursuit specialist, Julia Bradley, for some of the women’s endurance events. Bradley is coming off an injury that forced her to miss the national championships, but she should be in good form for this event.
Pedal will have a chance to catch up with most of these athletes at the Giant Bicycles 6 Days of Burnaby this week, which should provide interesting insight into the form of these riders as most will be in attendance. We will also provide more details on Symmetrics and Team R.A.C.E’s plans for the LA Track World Cup 2007 and the rest of the track season.
